St Mary The Virgin Church Long Sutton Lincolnshire

St Mary's Church has a 13th-century lead-covered timber spire. It is of a similar design to Chesterfield's twisted spire but Long Sutton's spire is straight. It is the highest, oldest and best-preserved lead spire in England and possibly Europe. The church is a Grade I listed building.

The magnificent lead covered spire is the tallest most beautiful wooden spire in Europe. The roofs of this stunning building are covered in lead on relatively low pitches. The south aisle has some graffiti on the roof which dates to 1841 which shows us when the last significant lead work on the roof was carried out. Some repairs were carried out in 1950’s but now the lead work has expanded and creeped causing cracking and there is water penetration into the body of the south aisle.
