Found in most of Britain and continental Europe (except for Scandinavia), and also in northern Asia as far east as Siberia. The caterpillar, which overwinters, is yellow-brown with darker stripes and feeds on Meadow grasses (Poa) and other grasses, and rarely on sedges (Carex). The chrysalis is yellow-brown and reddish-brown and lies on the surface of the ground inside a frail cocoon of silk and grass.
