St Nicholas church Lutton lincolnshire

  • Description (click)

Lutton (sometimes Lutton-Bourne) is a village and civil parish in the South Holland district of Lincolnshire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 1,261. It is situated about 4 miles (6 km) south-east from the town of Holbeach. The village has been known by the alternative name of Sutton St Nicholas. The civil parish comprises the village of Lutton, with Lutton Marsh to the north-east and Lutton Garnsgate to the south-west.

Lutton is recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book as "Luctone", with 16 households, 60 acres (0.24 km2) of meadow and one fishery. By the 8th century Lutton had become an established Anglo-Saxon settlement by the sea. Until the Dissolution of the Monasteries the Church belonged to the estates of the Cluniacs of Castle Acre Priory, Norfolk. For many centuries the village was part of the estates of the Duchy of Lancaster.

The present church of St Nicholas is a Grade I listed building dating almost entirely from the 16th century, and built of red brick. info Wikipedia.

The church is just 8 miles from me and sits out near the wash marsh which is around 3 miles away, close by is Long Sutton, a once busy market town but like most of the Fenland towns has seen a large decline in shops. This stunning little church is somewhat tricky to photograph, with it's small grounds it needs a good time of day to get the best from south side, would say from 11 am to 15 pm, I turned up later and did have issues with lighting and I forgot my filters, nice one Kate!! Inside it's very small and again lighting is hard to come by, if you looking for moody B&W this will give you some great shots, the church is difficult to get in, it's hardly open and with no info with who has the key you maybe in trouble. the church has some interesting carvings in the roof, all depicting marsh life but I will need some time to photograph them, due to the impossible angle and lighting, the long lens and tripod will be needed.
